A cool green gastropub that attracts a wide range of people from actors to MPs (or are they the same?). The spacious rectangular bar has raised seating areas around the edges for diners and an open kitchen at the far end that dispenses a lunch, dinner and weekend menu of modern British and European cuisine, such as smoked haddock with bubble and squeak, poached egg and mustard cream (£10) with some impressive steaks imported from a ranch in Texas. There's also an impressive 40-strong wine list and a couple of real ales on pump (Timothy Taylor Landlord and Deuchars IPA, with Kronenbourg Blanc the best of the rest).
Free internet access is also available. Judging from the packed crowd on our visit, this one could be around for some time. We especially liked the three-foot fezzes doubling up as lampshades above the dining area.
Cosy despite its cavernous interior, the White Hart is a modern take on the country manor, mixing chesterfield couches with trendy light fittings. It attracts a mixed crowd. Three extensive menus – lunch, dinner and weekend – run the gamut from proper gastropub nosh (think duck breast with pumpkin dauphinoise) to sausages and mash, and roasts. The impressive wine list will suit every palate. Friendly and helpful staff.
Come to The White Hart, a charming local pub in Kennington, south London, for super friendly service and hearty gastro fare. The traditional dining room has been given a chic twist. With wooden floors, quirky lampshades and mixture of exposed brick and designer wallpapered walls, The White Hart attracts a crowd of young professionals and hip locals. Famous for its sensational steaks and burgers, the restaurant has an assured and modern European menu including other classics like guinea fowl with Jerusalem artichokes and English asparagus wrapped in bacon with a fried egg served on toast with hollandaise. Veggies can tuck into pumpkin tortellini with pecorino cheese, rocket and truffle dressing or a grilled Portobello mushroom burger.
